A recent study has highlighted the growing influence of bloggers on their followers’ purchasing decisions, revealing that interactive practices and perceived credibility significantly shape consumer behaviour. Researchers from Shahid Beheshti University and the University of Tehran conducted a study that focused on the connection between bloggers’ interactive practices, their perceived credibility, and the ensuing para-social interactions with followers, ultimately linking these factors to purchase intentions. The findings were published in the Journal of Promotion Management.
Social media platforms, particularly Instagram, have become integral to modern marketing strategies. Bloggers, who often serve as opinion leaders in their niche markets, play a crucial role in shaping the attitudes and behaviours of their followers. This study, which surveyed 548 female Instagram users who follow female bloggers in Iran, aimed to delve deeper into the mechanisms through which bloggers can impact consumer behaviour, specifically through the concepts of interactive practices, credibility, and para-social interactions.
The research drew upon three established theories: social cognitive theory (SCT), theory of reasoned action (TRA), and social learning theory (SLT). These frameworks helped the researchers understand the dynamics between bloggers’ actions and their followers’ responses. The findings suggest that bloggers who actively engage with their followers not only enhance their perceived credibility but also foster strong para-social interactions, which in turn significantly increase the likelihood of followers purchasing the products promoted by these bloggers.
The study underscores the importance of Bloggers’ Interactive Practices (BIPs), which include activities such as responding to followers’ comments, creating engaging content, and fostering a sense of community among their audience. According to the researchers, these practices are pivotal in shaping how followers perceive a blogger’s credibility, which is broken down into two key dimensions: expertise and reliability. The study found a strong positive correlation between BIPs and both dimensions of perceived credibility.
When bloggers are perceived as experts in their field, followers are more likely to trust their recommendations and view them as reliable sources of information. This trust is crucial, as it lays the foundation for para-social interactions—a type of relationship where followers feel a personal connection with the blogger, despite the one-sided nature of the interaction. These interactions are not merely superficial; they play a significant role in influencing the followers’ purchasing decisions.
The study also explored how credibility, particularly the perceived expertise and reliability of bloggers, impacts para-social interactions. The researchers discovered that when followers view a blogger as credible, they are more likely to engage in para-social interactions. This engagement is characterised by a deepened connection between the follower and the blogger, where the follower may feel as though they know the blogger personally, despite never having met them.
These para-social interactions are more than just emotional attachments; they are predictive of actual purchasing behaviour. The study found that followers who had strong para-social interactions with bloggers were more likely to purchase the products that the bloggers endorsed. This finding aligns with Social Learning Theory, which suggests that people are more inclined to adopt behaviours they observe in credible and relatable role models.
The implications of these findings are significant for marketers and businesses, especially those looking to leverage influencer marketing as part of their strategy. The study suggests that businesses should carefully select bloggers who not only have a large following but also engage actively with their audience. These bloggers, by virtue of their interactive practices and credibility, can significantly boost the effectiveness of marketing campaigns.
Moreover, businesses should consider fostering long-term relationships with credible bloggers, as their influence on followers is not limited to mere brand awareness but extends to actual purchasing decisions. By aligning with bloggers who are perceived as both expert and reliable, businesses can tap into the para-social connections these influencers have cultivated, thereby increasing their chances of converting followers into customers.
While the study offers valuable insights, it is important to note its cultural and regional context. Conducted in Iran, a country with unique social and religious dynamics, the findings may not be entirely generalisable to other regions with different cultural backgrounds. The study focused exclusively on female followers of female bloggers, highlighting a specific segment of the population. Future research could expand this scope by examining different demographics, including male followers and bloggers, to gain a broader understanding of these dynamics.
