Sands, the UK’s leading pregnancy and baby loss charity, has shared insights from bereaved families on navigating grief during the Christmas season, offering suggestions for honouring lost babies while encouraging community support.
The festive period can amplify the grief of parents and families who have experienced the loss of a baby. To provide support, Sands asked its community to share how they remember their babies during Christmas. The response was overwhelming, with bereaved parents offering a range of heartfelt traditions and strategies.
Suggestions included creating personalised decorations in memory of their babies, donating gifts to children in need, lighting candles, and visiting memorial sites. Parents also shared the importance of speaking their baby’s name and participating in events like Sands’ Trees of Love or Starlight Walks.
Families’ personal stories
Josh and Melissa, who lost their daughter Islay Christina Anderton in July 2024, are approaching their first Christmas without her. Josh shared: “It’s our first year without Islay, so we don’t have traditions yet. But we’re finding solace in events like the Starlight Walk, which help us learn how to cope and find support from other parents going through the same.”
Michelle, whose daughter Ava-Lilly was stillborn in 2011, said her family has created an annual tradition: “Every year on Christmas Day, we visit her grave and lay a wreath. It’s comforting to connect with other families there, though the loneliness of this grief is sometimes hard to escape.”
Sands’ Bereavement Support team highlights the value of such rituals in fostering connection and easing feelings of isolation. They also stress the importance of friends and family offering thoughtful support, such as listening without judgement, using the baby’s name, or helping with practical tasks.
Supporting grieving parents
Jen Coates, Sands’ Director of Bereavement Support Services, emphasised the need for self-care during this emotionally demanding time. “We know this can be a challenging time of year, missing those who aren’t here celebrating with us. Practising self-care and remembering your baby in a way that feels right for you is vital,” she said.
Coates also encouraged those around bereaved families to reach out: “You can make a difference by simply checking in or donating to a charity in the baby’s name. These small gestures mean a lot.”
Ways to get involved
Sands is hosting Lights of Love services across the UK this December, welcoming all to reflect through music, readings, and candle lighting. Additionally, the charity invites families and friends to join the Starlight Walk on 7th December, an event under the night sky dedicated to babies lost too soon.
For those wishing to contribute, Sands’ Winter Wishes page allows dedications in memory of loved babies, with an option to leave donations supporting the charity’s vital work. From 3rd to 10th December, the Big Give’s Christmas Challenge will double all donations, furthering Sands’ mission to improve maternity care and save babies’ lives.
Sands is committed to providing support to anyone affected by pregnancy or baby loss for as long as it is needed.
