Ageing Is Natural: Matthew Bussard Explains How to Take Care of Yourself Holistically

Ageing can be frightening for many people, but it doesn’t have to be. By focusing on mental and physical health, maintaining friendships, and continuing to do what brings you happiness, ageing can be a humbling and even joyful experience.

Matthew Bussard shares advice on making your senior years an exciting part of your life.

Stay connected with friends

Social interaction is great for mental health, and no interaction is more satisfying than getting to be with your friends. One of the first things you should consider is arranging a weekly meetup where you can all gather and talk about life, do some fun activities, and relax. Maintaining social bonds is an excellent way of keeping your mind sharp. Don’t try to overthink things and over-plan though, just let every week’s meeting be a fun little adventure.

Keep physically active

Working out regularly is critical for enjoying the rest of your life, as it will keep you fit and flexible. Activities such as yoga can help you develop a better sense of balance, so you will be much less likely to trip and injure yourself. Working out is even more fun if you do it with friends, so this can be another great activity for you to do with your group.

Give back to your community

Volunteering at a local charity or other places is immensely gratifying. You will be actively making a difference in the lives of everybody you help. It’s beneficial for you as well, as you’ll be meeting more people and actively socialising with others. The act of giving is something that cannot be underestimated in value and contributes to overall psychological well-being.

Spend time outside in nature

Being outdoors is easy – all you need is to walk outside. You can focus on getting more fit, improving your focus, or simply discovering all the neat little places about your surroundings. Spending even twenty minutes a day outside is proven to be very helpful for both physical and mental health, but there are more benefits beyond that as well.

Pick up a new skill

Science has shown that learning a brand new skill is incredibly helpful for improving your memory, hand-eye-coordination, and critical thinking skills. It can be anything, from learning how to paint, learning a new language, even learning how to play an instrument. Whatever it is that is interesting to you, make that your focus.

Do nothing

That’s right, nothing. The wonderful thing about retirement is that there are no deadlines, no rules, just what you set for yourself. While it’s great to do something to occupy yourself, sometimes the best thing in the world is just to zone out and be.

As you now see, there’s nothing to be afraid of about getting older. It is simply the start of another chapter of your life, one full of brand new adventures and exciting things to come.
