A new study by NEXT reveals that running has become one of the most popular fitness resolutions among Brits, with 40% planning to take it up in 2025. The report highlights a growing interest in the sport, with one in eight (12%) aiming to complete a marathon, while more than one in six (17%) plan to tackle a half marathon or 5K. A further 14% hope to complete a 10K, reflecting a widespread enthusiasm for running challenges.

Fitness expert Sarah Campus, founder of LDN MUMS FITNESS and Soho House Chiswick’s Run Club, shared insights into the sport’s increasing popularity. “In the last year, I’ve certainly seen an increase in the uptake of running due to a number of different factors. The importance of community and social connection has increased massively since the pandemic. In the past year in particular, there has been a rise in social run clubs (including my own!) and events like Parkrun, which foster a sense of community among runners,” she said. “These gatherings offer both physical activity and social interaction, surrounded by like-minded people.”

Campus also noted the role of the pandemic in driving the fitness boom. “The pandemic encouraged many people to go outdoors for accessible forms of exercise, with running being one of the most common choices due to its convenience, acceptability for all, and its cost. This trend has continued, contributing to the sustained growth in running’s popularity.”

The impact of social media has further fuelled this trend, with platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Strava inspiring new runners. “Many influencers, including myself, are encouraging others, showing that you can run with no experience, no equipment, and at no cost,” Campus added.

Mental benefits of running

Beyond physical fitness, running offers significant mental health benefits. Campus highlighted these advantages: “Running reaps huge mental health benefits that not only benefit you but those around you as well. It reduces stress, anxiety, and depression through the release of feel-good hormones – endorphins. It improves mood, enhances focus, and provides a sense of achievement, while also fostering mindfulness and resilience.”

She also explained how running milestones, such as completing a race or improving personal times, serve as motivators. “My story alone is a testament to this. I wanted to challenge myself and do something outside my comfort zone, so I signed up for my first race, the London Marathon. Prior to this, I had never run more than 5K, but with a plan, I managed to achieve it, even with an injury during my journey.”

Reasons why running is suitable for everyone

  • Accessibility. Running requires minimal equipment and can be done anywhere, making it easy to start. Many local running clubs and beginner programmes provide support and motivation.
  • Scalability. Beginners can start with walking or short jogs and gradually increase intensity or distance. Free programmes like Couch to 5K are particularly helpful.
  • Full-Body Workout. Running engages multiple muscle groups, improving cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and muscle tone.
  • Efficiency. Running burns a high number of calories in a short time, supporting fitness goals like weight management and overall health.
  • Stress Reduction. Even short runs release endorphins, boosting mood and reducing stress.

The right gear for beginners

Sarah Campus emphasised the importance of proper gear for motivation, comfort, and injury prevention:

  • Running Shoes. A pair of running-specific shoes suited to your foot type is essential. Many sports shops offer gait analysis to support you.
  • Clothing. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking materials and layer appropriately for weather conditions. Synthetic materials over cotton to stay dry and comfortable.
  • Sports bras. Sports bras are essential for support and comfort when running.
  • Optional Accessories. Reflective gear, hydration equipment, and fitness trackers can enhance the running experience, especially for longer distances.

As running continues to gain popularity, Campus attributed part of its appeal to the rise of athleisure. “The intersection of fashion and sports has brought running into the cultural spotlight. Collaborations between high-end fashion brands and running events have attracted a wider audience,” she said.

For those looking to take up running in 2025, Campus’s advice is clear: start small, stay consistent, and invest in the right gear to enjoy the journey. Visit the NEXT website for running shoes and activewear to get started.
